About what you’d expect for a first time DUI:

Vili Fualaau, 23, was sentenced to one year in jail with all but one day suspended. He also was fined more than $2,000 and placed on probation.

Mary Kay Letourneau recently told Dateline (on the occassion of her one year wedding anniversary to Vili Fualaau) that they are trying to have a third child. Letourneau is 44 years old:

Cradle-robbing ex-teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her boy-toy husband Vili Fualaau, who just celebrated their first wedding anniversary, are trying to conceive a third child, the couple revealed in a TV interview.

“Everybody hopes,” said Letourneau, 44, of her baby-making plan in an interview with NBC’s “Dateline” set to air tomorrow night. “[We're] trying to,” added Fualaau, 22.

Letourneau would also like to resume teaching if possible:

Letourneau, who is a registered sex offender and was stripped of her Washington State teaching license, says she’d like to return to the classroom.

“If I choose to, I can, I’m interested in teaching algebra at the community college,” she told “Dateline.”

She also said she would be eligible to teach at private schools but public schools are off limits.

Letourneau also talks about coded messages written on bags of breast milk that she sent Vili while in prison:

The pair revealed that while Letourneau was in prison and forbidden to have contact with him, she sent him coded messages on the plastic bags of breast milk she shipped home for one of their baby daughters. “104 was ‘I love you’ … or if something was going wrong there was another one,” she explained.

“Every time I opened the freezer and I seen all these bags of her breast milk with the numbers on it, it just made me feel really, really good, really happy about it,” he said.

So bizarre. But they seem happy I suppose.

Yes, that’s right. A karaoke musical. Whatever that is.

Apparently a group called Gorilla Tango has been doing the show for awhile in Albequerque, and now they’re going to perform it in Chicago at their new theatre opening in September:

Gorilla Tango Inc., which opened a theater in downtown Albuquerque nearly two years ago, is opening a second theater in Chicago.

Abbate wants to promote exchanges of talent between the two locations as well and export successful productions developed here to Chicago, such as “Hamlet: The Vampire Slayer” and “The Mary Kay Letourneau Story: A Karaoke Musical.”

People magazine is looking at Mary Kay Letourneau’s life one year after marrying Vili Fualaau, and there are quite a few interesting tidbits.

How the couple affords their lifestyle:

Letourneau, who lost her teaching license, and Fualaau, who hopes to become a tattoo artist (they rely on the substantial six-figure fee they received for the TV rights to their wedding), are focused on getting full custody of their daughters Audrey, 8, and Alexis, 7.

Fualaau on Mary Kay’s children from her previous marriage:

Still, the situation is complicated for Fualaau. “I feel like I don’t really have a place except that I’m their mother’s husband,” he says. His wife’s children “had a mom and dad and then I came into the picture and they think, ‘I hate that guy; if he hadn’t come along this would never have happened.’”

What they tell the kids:

On a trip to the supermarket, the girls start fighting, prompting Letourneau to pull Audrey aside. “I reminded her that she is older than her sister, and that seemed like a chance to bring up what happened to me and Vili,” says Letourneau. “I told her, ‘Mommy and Daddy fell in love, but the rules were that we needed to wait until Daddy was older.’ “

Kind of bizarre.

Vili Fualaau was in court Tuesaday in SeaTac for a pre-trial hearing on a drunken driving charge.

His lawyer accompanied him but not his wife and former sixth-grade teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau.

Another hearing is planned next month before the judge decides whether the case will go to trial.

Fualaau was pulled over for speeding Dec. 22 in SeaTac. A breath test revealed a 0.136 blood alcohol level. The state limit for drivers is 0.08.

.136 really isn’t that terrible, although he certainly shouldn’t have been driving.

Life just refuses to get easier for Mary Kay Letourneau. Her new husband was recently arrested for drunk driving:

Vili Fualaau, the man who married his former sixth-grade teacher, was arrested in SeaTac for investigation of drunken driving.

King County sheriff’s spokesman John Urquhart says police pulled over a car Dec. 22 for going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. Fualaau was arrested after allegedly blowing .136 on a breath test. The state alcohol limit for drivers is .08.

The 1999 Cadillac he was driving was registered to Mary Kay Letourneau

Fualaau could get up to one year in prison, but since its his first offense he’ll more than likely get a slap on the wrist.

There’s no better person to start with when talking about teacher student sex scandals than Mary Kay Letourneau. In the national conciousness at least, she’s the one who started it all.

Like so many women who end up sleeping with their students, Letourneau seemingly had it all. She was the daughter of an ultra rightwing United States congressman (John G. Schmitz). She had seven brothers and sisters (as well as two half-siblings from her father’s affair … hmm). So she had a very apple pie upbringing. And she had a seemingly happy marriage.

Mary Kay “Schmitz” married Steve Letourneau in 1984, and they were quick to have children. Mary Kay ended up with four kids, two boys and two girls, from her marriage to Steve.

Trouble came in the form of an *8* year old child, Vili Fualaau. Letourneau met Fualaau when he was but a second grader; Letourneau was his teacher. She taught him again in the sixth grade, and the relationship became a sexual one when he was 13 years old. Thirteen … years … old. She was 33.

Their relationship lasted for nearly a year, finally coming to a temporary close when Steve discovered love letters from young Vili. He did the last thing I’d personally do by telling his entire family about his wife’s affair. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but I’d rather people not know that my wife was having an affair with a 13 year old.

Call me crazy.

A cousin went to the police, and Mary Kay Letourneau was arrested. She was arrested in February of 1997, pled guilty to two counts of second degree statutory rape, and sentenced to seven years and five months in prison. Lucky for her, the prison sentence was suspended and she was allowed to serve just six months in county lockup. She also had to enroll in a three year program for “sexual deviancy”.

Four months after being arrested Mary Kay gave birth. The father wasn’t Steve.

Letourneau was released from prison early, but just couldn’t stay away from Vili. She was arrested again in 1998 and was found with a wad of cash and a passport. It’s presumed that her and Vili had been planning on skipping out of the country. Her original prison sentence of seven plus years was reinstated.

A month later prison doctors discovered that Mary Kay was pregnant again. The father wasn’t Steve this time either.

This is where things get kinda tragic.

Mary Kay was discovered writing letters to Vili in November of 1999 and was sentenced to six months of solitary confinement. That’s pretty damn harsh in my opinion for a woman already doing seven years, but what can you do? Her father died in 2001, but she wasn’t allowed to attend his funeral.

Letourneau was finally released from prison again in 2004, and married Vili soon after. She took his surname.

The Letourneau case has brought a great deal of publicity to female teacher – male student relationships, and they seem to be popping up everywhere. Tuning into any radio morning show in America will confirm this. Without the outrageousness of Letourneau’s story it’s hard to imagine today’s amorous teachers getting nearly the publicity they get.

It might be wrong, but my first thought with most of these cases is the same thought that former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich had:

Where were teachers like [her] when I went to school?
