Maggie Laughlin

Maggie Laughlin, the 23-year-old former Mentor math teacher sentenced in August to three years in prison for having oral sex with a ninth-grade student, is asking to be released early from prison.

A hearing has been scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Wednesday (November 5, 2008). Less than three months after Lake County Common Pleas Judge Paul Mitrovich sentenced her, he will decide whether she will be released.

Laughlin, of WIllowick, was a first-year teacher at Shore Junior High School in Mentor. She admitted to performing oral sex on the student the last eight days of school. She pleaded guilty to eight counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a juvenile. The maximum sentence would have been 18 months for each count.

Laughlin lost her teaching license and will have to register her address every six months for the next 25 years.

When Mitrovich sentenced her Aug. 27, he said, “As a teacher you were placed in a position of trust. You showed uncaring selfishness on your part.”

I certainly hope that this judge doesn’t even consider an early release for Maggie.  There’s absolutely no reason why she should she be eligible for an early-release.

Former Lakota teacher Angela Johnson avoided jail Monday for trying to lure a senior student into sex.

But she can expect to tell her story to aspiring teachers to caution them about inappropriate behavior, a judge said when placing Johnson on probation and ordering her to serve 250 hours of community service.

As part of the plea agreement, Johnson pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the unruliness of a minor. That allowed her to avoid being classified as a sex offender as well as the possibility of an 18-month prison sentence.

She faced up to six months in the county jail on the misdemeanor charge. Oney, instead, placed Johnson on two years of probation and ordered her to pay a $1,000 fine.

Johnson gave up her Ohio teaching certificate as part of the plea agreement.
Oney said she wants Johnson to take on speaking engagements as part of her community service hours to teach speak to prospective educators “as a precautionary note (of) what is expected of their behavior.�?

Police said Johnson tried to persuade the 18-year-old male student into having sex with her by sending him inappropriate text messages and gifts since the start of the school year.

Johnson’s attorney Dennis Adams said the criminal case has caused his client “significant embarrassment.�? She’s lost lifelong friends and alienated others.
“She lost the profession she loved,�? Adams told the judge. “I do not believe you will see her in front of you again.�?

Speaking to other teachers about what she’s done will probably be just as humiliating as appearing in court to face these charges.

This is a teacher scandal with a twist. The parents of the kid involved have been indicted:

A former substitute teacher in Strongsville who had a baby with a student faces a 20-count indictment.

Christine Scarlett, 39, had a two-year affair with Steven Bradigan. They now share custody of their 2-year-old son. The two had the affair when Bradigan was a 17-year-old Strongsville High School student.

In an unusual move, the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury also indicted Bradigan’s parents for failing to report the sexual activity to police, NewsChannel5 reported.

She’s pleading to lesser charges, so it’s tough to say exactly how much she did wrong:

Angela Johnson gave her plea in a Butler County Courtroom this morning. In the plea agreement with prosecutors, Johnson has handed over her teaching certificate but will not have to register as a sex offender. As part of the agreement, the attempted sexual battery charges against Johnson were dropped.

In addition to the gifts, police say that Johnson also had inappropriate conversations and sent text messages.

This is old news, but I’m getting caught up after a hiatus. Angela Johnson, the Cincinnati area teacher, resigned last May 19:

A Butler County teacher has resigned amidst charges she tried to have sex with a student.

Angela Angus-Koppes is facing charges after a months long investigation by Madison County, Ohio police:

A local woman is facing charges, accused of having sex with a teenage student who has developmental disabilities.

According to The Madison Press, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the allegations for months.

Pat said her son’s teacher, Angela Angus-Koppes, admitted that she was having sex with her son.

“She did it to mine and I trusted her with my child. She was supposed to be a mentor,” Pat said.

According to a sheriff’s report, Koppes was a special education teacher with Jonathan Alder School District.

“I thought she was a very nice, kind, caring, Christian woman,” Pat said.

That’s really quite sick.

Angela Johnson is our newest teacher in a bit of legal trouble. She’s a 34 year old Social Studies teacher at Lakota East High School in Cincinnati. She’s charged with:

A Lakota East High School teacher has been charged today with attempted sexual battery on a male student and was arrested.

Butler County Sheriff officials said Angela Johnson, 34, of Cincinnati, was arrested this morning after being interviewed at the Liberty Township school.

Johnson, who teaches social studies, is accused of attempting to have sexual relations with a male student.

Sheriff detectives came to the school this morning and then took Johnson to police headquarters where she was questioned and then arrested. She was charged with one count of attempted sexual battery, a fourth-degree felony and remains in custody at the Butler County Jail on $5,000 bond.

Police said Johnson had inappropriate conversations and text messages with the student and gave the student gifts.

The Ohio Board of Education met this week to decide if Nicole Long, the Toledo teacher who pleaded guilty to sexual battery, should lose her license permanently:

The Ohio Board of Education today will consider permanently revoking the license of an English teacher at Ayersville High School found guilty of having sex with a 17-year-old male student in her Defiance home.

In exchange for Long’s guilty plea, Carson Slade, a county assistant prosecutor, recommended that she be jailed in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, Stryker, instead of being sent to prison.

Long also was to forfeit her teacher’s license, be placed on probation, and ordered to attend counseling.
