Maggie Laughlin
Maggie Laughlin, the 23-year-old former Mentor math teacher sentenced in August to three years in prison for having oral sex with a ninth-grade student, is asking to be released early from prison.
A hearing has been scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Wednesday (November 5, 2008). Less than three months after Lake County Common Pleas Judge Paul Mitrovich sentenced her, he will decide whether she will be released.
Laughlin, of WIllowick, was a first-year teacher at Shore Junior High School in Mentor. She admitted to performing oral sex on the student the last eight days of school. She pleaded guilty to eight counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a juvenile. The maximum sentence would have been 18 months for each count.
Laughlin lost her teaching license and will have to register her address every six months for the next 25 years.
When Mitrovich sentenced her Aug. 27, he said, “As a teacher you were placed in a position of trust. You showed uncaring selfishness on your part.”
I certainly hope that this judge doesn’t even consider an early release for Maggie. There’s absolutely no reason why she should she be eligible for an early-release.

I was once a teenage schoolboy myself and I can affirm that if this boy was at least 12 years old he was not likely a victim at all, at least not outside of the minds of those who pass and support such legislation. These victimless crimes are truly mind boggling, but not surprising given the hysterical scapegoating heritage of the witch hunt that can be attributed to this countries puritanical colonizers and which is carried on as a tradition by the political Christian right and it’s pundits in government, media, psychology and law.
More folks need to turn off FOX TV and Dr. Laura and instead read books such as ” Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex:” by Judith Levine. The book illustrates well how these statutory rape laws are not in reality about protecting the rights of post-pubescent minors at all, but are instead much more about reaffirming both the values of the political Christian right and the states (governments) ability to manipulate and control the private lives of people as much possible.
I feel sorry for this young women, and I look forward to the day when the these statutory rape laws are rescinded and the names of those convicted under them rehabilitated.
And don’t be asinine enough to think that by saying the above that I am in anyway supporting pedophilic relations, which is defined as sexual relations between a post-pubescent individual and a pre-pubescent individual, not at all. Nor that I am defending any kind of genuine sexual abuse, such as actual rape, again not at all. It is just that after studying the issue with an open and sincere mind that it should be apparent to every contentious person that the fabricated belief that all sexual relations between post-pubescent minors and those considered adults is automatically abusive is nothing more then a dangerous fabrication, a fabrication based upon erroneous notions that has been foisted on a gullible society by certain self-interested parties, when quite clearly the evidence points one in a much more nuanced direction.

She was my teacher last year and I can tell you for sure that this boy, Matt, came on to her. He was absolutely not a victim, Maggie is. It just isn’t seen that way because she is over 18 and he isn’t. It’s sick that people twist it around that way. I think she deserves to get out early.
This kid new what he was doing as well as she, come on oral sex thats not even nothing big, she should get out of jail early and hopefully it is granted for her.
I agree with T. Rivera. What she did was not that bad, to treat the youngster to oral sex. For sure she will be a favorite memory for him even when he is an old man.

Wow… if I got some of that when I was 15 I would have been the envy of all my friends. I would be getting high-fives, not hugs of consolation for a scarred experience. I have no problem with laws concerning age consent, but to call these boys victims of rape is a slight exaggeration.

To suggest that these are not crimes simply because a twelve year old boy would love to b*ng his hot teacher is asinine. What kind of reasoning is that? Probably not a line of argument that you would hear from someone who has been a parent.
Yes, I am a hetero male and at twelve I could only fantasize about b*nging hot older blondes… but so what? That is no justification our excuse. Do you know what else I recall dreaming about? Boy, if I only got my hands on a Lamborghingi, I would have had a super blast! And I wanted a real Colt 45 not a cheap plastic replica! Oh, and what about all those bags of candy that I kept trying to buy and sneak into my closet to munch on whenever I wanted!
But sadly, no. You do not want a twelve year old to have anything and everything that he wants. You definitely did not want me behind the wheel of an expensive sports car, or handling a gun, or with all the candy I wanted. It is just common sense. And you would not want anyone giving those things to your kid. Nor would you want women walking by on the street deciding to b*ng your kid if it took their fancy.
Thus, just because you were twelve, and you have correctly remembered the mental state of a child, it does not in anyway mean that it was right or not a crime. By that same logic – i.e. having the brain of a young boy – it ought not to be a crime if an adult hands a real rifle to a kid because he doesn’t like the plastic version. It is not hysterical scapegoating – and I think your word choice is off there, scapegoating for what you failed to add? – to suggest that it should not be open season for adults to surrender their responsibility to be… wiser.

I’m with T. Rivera on this one, and Liberal: A 15 yr old boy definitely knows what he wants sexually. He’s certainly not “Pre-pubescent” either, as they’re in their teens. By nature they’re ready to mate. It’s the way our species is. And it goes both ways for that matter. I honestly don’t think they’ve done anything wrong, and as T.Rivera said, it really boils down to control against minors from a religious perspective (which ironically, christian law allows for sexual encounters between those 13 and older; people got married all the time by that agreeable age, biblically). The best part is how we like to promote sexuality of children (why do 7 year olds need thongs? why do companies make these kind of clothes?) Now THAT is perverse.
